Big bags and missing glassware

Every now and then I spot, or discover, a kleptomaniac (aka a klepto)....

Usually when one of these klepto-sightings occurs there is alcohol present and the "must have" item is some kind of glass.....(which leads me to believe that alot of kleptos reveal their true nature after a few drinks and that kleptos always feel they need glassware).

On Saturday night I watched a klepto shove a beer glass into his girlfriends big bag. As if this wasn't bad enough he made sure people saw he was doing it......(which now leads me to believe that kleptos are proud of being kleptos ).

After watching this display I had a little klepto sighting flash back... It was almost a year ago.....I was sitting at a restaurant with some friends, when after a few drinks the klepto at the table revealed herself by sticking a glass in her bag (there often seems to be one klepto in a group of friends). Then the klepto looked over at my bag and gave me a "klepto compliment".....

Klepto: wow, you have a nice big bag. you'd be able to fit a few glasses in that.
Me: ummm, thanks..... I think.

While i dont mind being friends with a klepto, I won't be inviting them to my next dinner party - I like my glassware too much ;)

Are you a klepto? Do you know a klepto?

  1. I might have done that once or twice when I was a student. But now it's a thing of the past and I felt very guilty afterwards. And I feel suitably chastised having read your e-mail. I've also seen people stealing clothes, which really really annoyed me!

  5. haha! i love that "While i dont mind being friends with a klepto, I won't be inviting them to my next dinner party - I like my glassware too much"
I'd also be wary about inviting them into my house. you'd have to start doing inventory after every party.

  6. I have to admit that once apon a time I was a very bad Klepto. In my defense I was jobless and homeless and if I didnt steal I had no clothes or food. Or at least at the time I thought that. I was a little niave. Now I would never dream of taking something without asking/paying for it! I have to much to loose!

  7. I once klepted a pie out of my college dinning hall. lol. But those days are long over. I can't believe people steal glasses??? That sounds so bizarre. I think that would be the most embaressing thing ever to be caught by like a restaurant manager for stealing a glass.

  12. I did it - I stole beer mugs from a McGintys in Maritzburg - I have no recollection of it - just that they were all there the next morning!

  13. I had a klepto moment back in high school. My friends dad really loves the seasoning salt at Red Robin, so I stuck the shaker in my bag the next time we went. To this day he still tells me that he wishes he had some more. Sorry bud, you'll have to steal your own this time!

  14. Haha yes, maybe this is a Saffa thing, cos we are dodgy, but loads of my friends used to steal cutlery from restaurants. I shall have to do a survey to see how many people do it here too.

  16. Ok I did a survey (of one person) and yes they do it here too, mostly only tot glasses though, I think the quantity award goes to South Africa.

  18. I know a girl that buys stuff from Wal-mart, uses it once, then returns it. I looked at her like she was crazy. I have too much of a conscience for something like that...

I've done "The Klepto" only once, and the guilt was too overwhelming to do it again. Lol

  21. I have a friend that's a bit of a klepto. I love her to bits though and she's never stolen anything when I was with her.

I once stole a Mr Magoo video from the video shop. I was 4 and I don't remember it but apparently I just walked out with it. My mom was too embarrased to take it back when she realised what I had taken. LOL

  22. I actually have a friend that does the same. Her specialty is shot glasses and she has a whole collection of them at home. Its usually done as a joke (I must admit, its bloody funny when it happens) so I'm not sure how klepto she actually is....

  23. Oh dear - I have to admit I have taken home some interesting glasses - in my defence they were really interesting...actually there’s no excuse, it is a terrible thing to do. One of those great ideas you have after too much tequila! I am currently in recovery!

  24. Oooo.

I have to confess, I have taken some stuff home from restaurants, but it is not because I am a klepto. I did without thinking about it. You know when you ask for dressing on the side at a restaurant and they give it to you in those little ceramic/glass/plastic pots? I would put those in the leftover box to take home, not meaning to "steal" them. But I didn't return them when I realized what I had done either... out of embarrassment and shame.
