Movie thoughts: Eat Pray Love

For those of you who are not familiar with the bestselling book, here is a bit about the film: Eat Pray Love is the true story of a woman (Elizabeth Gilbert) who, after getting a divorce and realising that her passion for life (and most other things) is slipping away, goes on a year long globe-trot to try find spiritual enlightenment and herself.

I must admit that when I went to see this film last night, I had great expectations going in and thankfully I did not leave dissapointed. I loved the film and was captivated until the end (even though it is over 2 hours long and is rather slow paced throughout)

The movie is filled with beautiful scenery (that instantly made me feel the urge to take a trip to anywhere exotic), good advice, inspiration and an abundance of likeable characters. Julia Roberts is outstanding as Liz Gilbert and it is impossible not to love Javier Bardem as the caring Brazilian, Felipe.

I think this is a wonderfully honest chick flick. I would highly recommend it to all woman (whether you have read the book or not).

Have you seen the film? what did you think?

  4. Hmm, I've been skeptical ever since the movie went into production.

Much as I love the book, and have read it a few times over, I think that the real value is that it's extremely subjective - everyone takes something different from the book, and it's that aspect that has made it such a best-seller... that and the fact that it's handed down, and the word of mouth promotion rather than over-blown hype.

So a movie on something that is essentially a personal journey (both for the storyline and for those reading it and taking inspiration from it), just wouldn't really seem like it could capture the essence.

Aside from that, generally I haven't heard many good reviews... mostly due to the 'lost in translation' factor and also the trivialization aspect.

I'm not such a huge fan of chick flicks in general though, so not the kind of thing I'd watch anyhow. ;-)

The book will always be awesome though, to read whenever I need a boost!

  13. I read the book, and loved it.

My best friend, who just had open heart surgery last week, and I decided to go see it together.

We left feeling the need to go DO something...

And someday, when she's all better, we're traveling.

Long story short, we left inspired. It was a little slow, but so perfect for a relaxing afternoon movie.

    :-)

  20. I haven't read the book (yet) but I'd rather do that than see the movie.

I'm not much of a movie goer, especially when it's based on a book. It rarely stays true to the story...and I can't stand Julia Roberts. lol! Sorry!

  21. I've seen the movie (and read the book.) Loved the movie...thought it was very true to the spirit of the book. The essence you know? So often movies fail to catch that when making movies from beloved books...I actually thought the movie was even better than reading the book! And I think this primarily because the protagonist's role was MADE for Julia Roberts and the landscapes of the locations so inspiring...

    P.S. Lovely blog, I'm glad I stumbled across it/you this evening! :)

  24. I saw the film a few nights ago and felt that while very sweet, it missed the depth of her spiritual journey, leaning more towards light entertainment.
