Movie thoughts: The Hunger Games

First off, I should probably mention that I am a obsessed crazy fan of the The Hunger Games books, so I did have rather big expectations going into the film...

Yesterday The Boyf (who doesn't know much about the books ) and I went to watch a sneak pre-release screening of The Hunger Games film and we both enjoyed it.

The good: Even though there are slight differences to the book, all the main scenes are in the film. The locations, costumes and sets are great. Most of the characters are well cast  - Personally I think Jennifer Lawrence is  fantastic as Katniss Everdeen.

The not so good:  I felt like the biggest flaw in the film was definitely character development -  quite a few of the characters lacked the depth and intensity that they had in the book. Also at 2 hours and 22 minutes the film is pretty long, but  I seriously doubt they could have made it any shorter without leaving key parts out (The Boyf and I didn't really notice how long it was).
I
Final thoughts: Unfortunately the movie fell short of being as brilliant as the book, but is still entertaining - Plus, it really is awesome to see the book come to life on screen. If I had to rate it, I would probably give this movie a 7 out of 10.

Notes: Before watching the film, I'd recommend that you read The Hunger Games book (written by Suzanne Collins). The film will be released in South Africa on 13 April.

Have you seen The Hunger Games yet? What did you think?

  1. yip- i agree. saw it yesterday and i want to use words like 'fine' and 'okay' to describe it. i feel like you don't get to know who the characters are and i think josh hutchenson is completely wrong for peeta.

  2. I haven't read the books yet. I want to see the movie/s first. I made the error in reading the Harry Potter and Twilight books before seeing the movies. Not this time though.

  3. Saw it yesterday, too! Really enjoyed it - although I agree 100% on the character development. I wish they had given more to Rue!

  6. I agree...though I think the movie may have taken about 6 hours to get all the subleties and character development of the book. Also...Lenny Kravitz- YUMMY!

  8. Hiya! Thanks for this summary about the movie...I honestly have no prior history with the books, so reading your review gave me a little insight. Think I will take up your recommendation to read it first before seeing the flick.

  9. I absolutely LOVED the books. Crazed fan. ;) However, I was seriously disappointed with the movie. My main problem was that the characters were flat - like you said there wasn't enough character development. In the book you are given such a clear picture of their personalities, motives, ect. In the book I loved how it was written in first person. I wish they could have somehow translated that into the movie. I was also annoyed by the things they left out, changed and completely glossed over. Also I think Liam Hemsworth was the worst Gale ever and Josh Hutcherson (Gale) was perfect. Jennifer Lawrence wouldn't have been my first choice for Katniss. In the book they clearly state that she is small in stature and thin for her age as she was generally malnourished because of her district's poverty. They also say she was one of the smaller tributes. Jennifer Lawrence is by no means fat but she certainly doesn't look malnourished or small. Also I found that she almost always had the wrong expression on her face - for example she look confused when she was supposed to be angry.

In turn, the books are AMAZING but the movie is far from it. (my opinion)

  10. Lipgloss kisses - Yes, the book is WAY better than the film. I did like Jennifer though, despite everyone saying she is a bit too "big" to be Katniss. :)
