Umi Restaurant

Recently I visited Umi restaurant to try their winter menu, on a very sunshine-filled winter's day. Here are some of my thoughts...

The Restaurant:

Located above the main road of Camps Bay, overlooking the beach, this modern Japanese restaurant has ocean views and a fabulous mix of decor.

The restaurant is made up of 3 areas, each with it's own vibe and appeal:
1. The terrace (pictured above) is where we decided to have lunch. It's the most relaxed area, with the best beach views and umbrellas to cool things down in the summer heat. It's ideal for cocktails & sunsets.
2. The inside dining area: two huge, yellow chandeliers and faux, cherry blossoms greet you as you wander in from the terrace. The decor is modern and stylish. The perfect setting for a dinner party or fancy date night.
3. The whisky bar: situated at the back of the restaurant, the trendy looking bar area is stocked with 100 whiskies from all over the world. A winning spot for a private function or intimate drink.

The Food:

My mom and I tried the winter set menu (2 courses for R190 and 3 courses for R230). For starters we had the fried wanton with shrimp, then for mains I had the sweet & sour short rib, while she chose to go with the chicken thighs. Finally, for dessert we had the chocolate brownie and lemongrass panna cotta.

To be perfectly honest, I don't have a single thing to say about the food that isn't a compliment. Every dish was delicious, interesting and worth trying.  I might recommend the short rib over the chicken, but both were excellent and it's probably more down to personal preference.

The main course portions were generous and  the dessert was thankfully small enough to finish.

All in all, I really enjoyed my lunch experience at Umi. The food was yummy, the staff was outstanding and the view is beautiful. My mom and I both agree we would definitely go back again.
