Lunch at Charango Barbacoa

Looking for a restaurant with a casual atmosphere and plethora of steak options? Well,  I think I may have found you exactly that.

Recently I had lunch at the new Charango Barbacoa and it was pretty good. Here are my thoughts...

The Restaurant

Located on buzzing Bree Street, in Cape Town's city centre, this restaurant is among good company with a bunch of other great eateries & bars within walking distance.

Recently revamped and now under new ownership (it's part of the successful Harbour House Group), I had high hopes for my lunch there.

The first thing you notice when walking in is the openness of the restaurant, with ample seating outside on the sidewalk (which will be great during the summer months).

The simple, modern decor is inviting and I really liked the industrial style lighting.

The Food

Carnivores can rejoice at this meaty menu. Diners can choose from a wide range of steak cuts (and ageing) - plus you have copious amounts of rubs, butters and sauces to accompany your meat.

While the steaks are rather good, it was the starters and tacos that really stole the show for me. I especially loved the pulled pork taco ( served with slaw, burnt pineapple salsa & tomato aioli)  and the flame grilled prawns (they come on a bed of chunky avocado, red kidney beans, chilli & basil salsa). Both of these I would highly recommend.

Expect medium sized portions, South American inspired flavours and good options for everyone (yes, even a few for vegetarians)

Overall it was a good experience, which was made better by the friendly & knowledgeable staff.

Will I be going back?  I probably won't be rushing back to have the steak (Honestly, I'm not the biggest steak eater), but those tacos and prawns have been calling to me ever since I left.... So, yes.

Charango Barbacoa is open everyday for lunch & dinner . For more info visit their site HERE

Please note: while this lunch was complimentary, all opinions are honest & my own.
