Turning pages

Currently I am not reading much of anything (which is weird for me). I started a book about a month ago and haven't had the time (or enthusiasm) to get past the second chapter. I even have a few books in my bookshelf begging to be read, but I cant bring myself to begin any of them (Note: maybe reading the Twilight Saga so quickly messed with my head? heehee).

In the last two months I seem to have gone from "loyal book lover" to "magazine whore" *gasp*.
You see, instead of spending time with books I have been seeing magazines - just casually flipping through the pages of many magazines seems so much better than committing to one whole novel right now

I'm sure this "magazines only" phase will pass quickly. I think all I need to do is find an incredible book to read right now.

What are you reading right now?? Whats your favourite book right now? - do tell ..maybe i will feel inspired to go out and get it :)

  1. That's why they call it 'casual literature'. there's nothing wrong with it. I'm completely book mad and even I have to take a break now and again.

Don't worry you'll get back into it when you find the right book:)

  2. "Curiosity shop" by Ch. Dickens, but I'm sure you've read it.

  3. By the way, I enjoyed Twilight, but strangely, not enough to want to read the other books in the series. I don't know why. Or maybe I'm just going through a lazy phase too. I also love magazines, they are less commitment!

  4. I also wrote a post about books! Great minds think alike - head over to my page. Maybe you can get a few reads there. :)

  5. I have a magazine "thing" also. I see that you're planning to read The Host next. As much as I loved the Twilight series, I just couldn't get into Host for some reason!

  6. I just finished "BLOOD RIVER" by Tim Butcher, about the Congo River. I LOVED it.

About to read "CHILD SOLDIER" and "No. 1 Lady's Detective Agency".

Now reading TOO LOUD A SOLITUDE, by a Czech writer. Which is perhaps shorter than any mag article!

The list might look impressive. But it did take me 4 months to create time just to finish the 1st book!

  7. PS: At the mo I'm readin the Watchmen graphic novel but I seriously suggest Phillip Pullmans's His Dark Materials trilogy (remember the golden compass movie) yeah that's him. It's amazing. Amazing!

  8. Dude I kept seeing you mention Twilight on your blog so I bought the book for my Dec holiday, read it quickly and thought "geez this is a piece of fluff, wtf I want my money back and how can adults be fans" BUT I just finished New Moon coz I'd already ordered that one from the library, and I really enjoyed it and totally changed my mind! so now I've ordered the third book online and have to wait two whole weeks, arghhhhh.

If you enjoy vampire stories, try Poppy Z Brite, she's quite good, read her a long time ago, wrote a few stories about gay vampires, loved it (like maybe you think hmmm gay vampire guys but she wrote it so appeallingy you wish you were a gay guy and one of them). And of course Anne Rice the master.

to Kitty Cat: don't let the first book stop you from reading the rest of the series, I too was not going to bother had I not already ordered the second book.

Brazen: have you read Raymond E Feist, if not get Magician - the greatest book in the history of the world, you will not be disappointed! I assure you! it is the first book of a magnificent series, and one of the few series I can re-read multiple times. please let me know if you do read it and what you think of it, can do a post on it :)

  9. CHANTAL - hi there. Glad you are also enjoying the Twilight Saga (its not for everyone).
"Eclipse" is even better than "New Moon".
The last book, "breaking Dawn", has lots of mixed reviews. I even had mixed feeling about it. Let me know how you find it when you get to that one.

Ps - Thanks for all the recommendations.

  10. I'm completely book mad. I'm majoring in English Lit. 'Nuff said. In any case I am a big big fan of the classics. I'm not talking Jane Eyre so much as I speak about Catch-22, Great Gatsby, and Catcher in the Rye. Sometimes by going back we discover how to go forward.

Oh and I totally second reading Feist. He's good and I don't usually read fantasy.

  11. I'm reading The Great Divorce. I've read it before, but my hubby and I are reading it together this time. :-)

  12. These are three of my (somewhat) favorite recent finds...

The Thought Gang - Tibor Fischer

Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates - Tom Robbins

    Factotum - Charles Bukowski

  13. I just finished The Kite Runner, which was wonderful although the ending was a bit contrived. My recent favorite (from last year) is Water for Elephants. I highly recommend it.

  14. I'm reading Chill Factor by Sandra Brown. I love all of her books.

  15. Most of my favorite books are manuals or essays on current events.....I don't they are going to inspire you much.

  16. Some superb reads from my list last year:

Aron Ralston - Between a Rock and a Hard Place
Margaret Atwood - The Blind Assassins
Luke Rhinehart - The Dice Man

Magazines have a tendency of making one sick after a short while, don't you worry!

  17. I just finished reading The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, and it blew my mind. It is so good. But it is not for everyone, it is bleak and harsh and sad.

Otherwise I just finished reading mushy peas on toast, and that was loads of fun.

Or strange nervous laughter by Bridget McNulty

  18. its not cheating if you actually bought the mag ;)

Just finished the life of Pi....i know almost everyone has read it at this stage but still...very good

  19. Reading Twilight because everyone seems to be blogging about it, but - you're right - it's not for me. I'm too scared!!!!

  20. I have been suckered into the Twilight series too. I think it is killing my reading mojo because it is just so much in a big slam. I will need a break after I finish Eclipse!

  21. Well if you really want a FANTASTIC read - get any of Dan Brown's books. I am completely hooked. He writes things like 'The Da Vinci Code' & 'Angels & Demons'. Also read Kathy Reighs - she's amazing!! She's also the writer of the series 'Bones', the episodes come from her books. STUNNING!!!

  22. Oh i'm the same, can't get into any books! i start, put them down, and when i get into them again, i have to start from the beginning!

i'm a magazine person too! if you find any good books, let me know!

  23. I love reading. But, college makes reading such a chore. I usually do all my reading in the summer when I'm not required to read essays.

But, currently, I'm reading a book called "Anything Goes". So far, I don't like it. And I doubt I will, so I'm thinking of ditching it and picking up Alice in Wonderland instead!

  24. I'm a book slut... and a magazine whore

    ps... new here, love it!

  25. Read "The Alienist" by Caleb Carr. A psychological thriller set in 1897 Manhattan. Just captivating.

  26. I am hooked on the Twilight series already but go thru phases where I am really into reading books and then magazines seem to take over eventually.

I find that a rainy day with nothing else to do but stay inside with a blanket, cup of tea, coffee or something stronger always makes reading that much more enjoyable!
