Chartfield Guesthouse

Recently my husband and I spent a night at Chartfield Guesthouse, in Kalk Bay, and we were once again reminded how wonderful Cape Town's "deep south" can be.

A bit about the location & guesthouse:

Kalk Bay is a trendy, yet quaint, seaside suburb that is loved by locals & tourists alike - Plus, with it recently making it onto the Forbes list of the '12 Coolest Neighbourhoods Around The World' (June 2018), there is really no question that Chartfield Guesthouse is in a brilliant location.

The guesthouse is within walking distance of the Kalk Bay harbour and the main street (where you will find numerous restaurants and a collection of boutique stores). The city of Cape Town is only about a 45 minute drive away.

Most of the rooms at Chartfield are located in a house that is over 120 years old. Even though it has been restored, it still retains a lot of it's original charm.

Our room:

We were lucky enough to get to stay in the loft room (also know as the 'Southern Horizon' room).

Once you climb the super steep steps to get into the room, you enter into a private and calming haven. The decor is modern and simple. Like most rooms in the guesthouse, there are the usual creature comforts and necessities: a  TV, safe, hairdryer, closet (in case you want to unpack), towels and basic toiletries.

Though, I'll be honest, the thing that really made this room a instant winner was the balcony and sea view (which I think is the best view in the whole guesthouse).

Quick fact: all rooms are named after boats in the Kalk Bay harbour.

Extras:

Breakfast is offered at an additional charge of R120 per person and it is well worth trying. The menu has a lot of great options and I decided to try their all- time favourite breakfast option 'The Bomb' (which is a poached eggs, on toasted ciabatta, with crispy bacon and cheese). It was delicious.

Side note: you can enjoy this lovely breakfast without being a guest. Give it a try if you feel like a quieter breakfast spot in the area.

Final thoughts:

The staff was great and the vibe was very relaxed . We both loved the room and would definitely book it again.

The pool area is lovely, but sadly it was a bit too chilly to swim - but hopefully we will stay on a warmer weekend next time.

The convenience of being able to walk to a few restaurants and bars was a big plus.

The only negative is that there is no private parking offered by the guesthouse, and parking can be harder to find on weekends (they also do remind you not to leave any valuables in your car, this is South Africa after all and best to be cautious).

If you are looking for a place to stay in Kalk Bay, I would highly recommend this guesthouse and would definitely suggest you get one of their sea view rooms.
