Just thinking...

Today is Monday and as a general rule i try not to think too much on Mondays. I prefer to drift through the day as quickly and brainlessly as possible.....but today is different - today my head is full of thoughts...

As i have mentioned before, my job is very unchallenging at the moment. This fact has led me to start thinking of ways I can escape from this office torture. While roaming around in my very cluttered mind today I stumbled upon a rather good idea. The idea would require a lot of work, very little time in an office enviroment and would be loads of fun ( i know you probably just dying to know what it is, but I think its best to keep it to myself for now) .

Right now, my idea is just a mixed up thought, a flicker at the end of the dark "office tunnel" and a dream , but hopefully one day i will be doing something that will allow me to have flexible hours and not have to sit an office all day long...*sigh*.....I'll let you know if anything comes of all this thinking and my new idea..... ;)

PS – I would love to hear if any of you have ever started your own successful business?

  8. I have never finished anything that I started. Seeing since the internet is Global....any chance you could use a Minnesotan Assistant?

  9. Please find something you LOVE. That is SO important. You don't know if you will succeed unless you try- the business, I mean. Go for it.

  10. I'm at the other end of the spectrum. I've been running my own business for ten years now. I am SO ready to just go to work for someone else and let them worry about all of the crap.

BUT, I don't like what I do anymore either. It would be different if I was doing something I love.

  11. Yeap, I run my own side biz, and enjoy it very much.... it's like a vacation from my day job, and it is a very nice addition to income and keeping my skills up...

    Go for it!

  16. Having set up my own business (www.iced-online.com) my advice would be:

    1. Make sure it is a business which focuses on something you are really truly passinate about. It can be really tough running your own business and that passion is the thing that will pull you through any difficult times
    2. Do your homework - do a lot of research on who's already out there doing what you want to do - can you offer something different / better than them? What do they charge? What are people prepared to pay? Will you make the salary that you need to have? What are the opportunities for business growth?
    3. Get your credentials sorted - check out any qualifications you might need or that would be good to have to differentiate you from everyone else.
    4. Initally work at it in the evenings / weekends until you have enough feedback to know it's a goer, then work at it part time and then as business grows full time. It's a sad fact that most businesses fail so don't put all your eggs in one basket straight away.

All of this said, running your own business can be immensly fulfilling and rewarding. It's A LOT of hard work but it can also be a lot of fun!

  17. Quite the opposite, I have become "deadwood" in my office (well not really), but I have come to accept the fact that my office environment will never improve (just read the examples in my blog for more details), so I have settled down with my sights on retirement. After I completed my tenure in this dump, I will be able to pursue other 'real world' goals and actually look forward to accomplishing somethings. Until then, I am enjoying the freen internet and toilet paper and doing as little work as possible.

  18. When starting a business for the first few years do not over extend yourself, too many businesses try to run before they can walk, and they fail, I see it time and time again. I run my own company (have one partner) and when it's your business remember there is no such thing as sick leave, and I haven't taken a day's leave yet this year, but it's much better than working for someone else, I've never had a boss but I can imagine what it would be like, bleh. There are alot of perks which go along with it, so it is definitely worth having all the stress of the business on your shoulders, sure sometimes I feel like saying fuck it and working for some company where I don't have to worry and know my pay cheque is coming at the end of the month regardless, but that pales in comparison to what you do get our of being your own boss. If you think your idea is viable go for it, the sooner the better, important to surround yourself with the right people, and always have everything in writing.
